RIDE REPORTS 2011

SUNDAY 27TH DECEMBER

"TWO SOUPS" XMAS PUB CRAWL, AVON VALLEY, HAMPSHIRE

Riders: 10   Neil Foss, Roy George, Helen George, Chris Gilbert-Norton, Dave Mullard, Karen Mullard, Graham Rendell, Dave Rodgers, Graham Seage, Christopher "Sutts" Sutton.

Weather: 11 degrees, 4mph SSW wind, greycloud

Pubs: 7    The Lamb, The Three Tuns, Queens Head, Burley "whiffy" Manor, Elm Tree, Inn on the Furlong, Avon Causeway.

Gilbey left Burley at 11.35 for a mad sprint to the rendezvous point at the “Woolpack” at Sopley, arriving at just gone 11am. The rest of the group were already there, unfortunately it was agreed that first port of call would be the “Lamb” at Winkton as 11am was considered too early for some!!! Sutts left Ringwood at about 10am for a 10.30am rendezvous at Chez Log in St Leonards. Following some minor maintenance on Logs front changer so that changing gear across his 4 chain ring crank operated smoothly, Sutts, Roy and Helen purchased cocktail sausages and mince pies at the Marks and Spencer at the BP garage at St Leonards. On leaving the garage we crossed the A31 and headed up through Avon Country Park onto Boundary Lane then down Hurn Lane and crossed Avon Causeway before arriving at The Woolpack car park. Dangerous Dave, Slightly Steaming Seage and Neil Foss were already there, pleasantries and sausages were exchanged. Grahame Rendell was the next to arrive glistening with huge beads of sweat across his forehead, followed by the tinsel covered bike ridden by our supreme leader, Gilbey. More pleasantries were exchanged mostly about the mildness of the weather.

Leaving The Woolpack we followed Harpway Lane to The Lamb at Winkton. At noon The Wobblies were the only ones in the pub. It was at this point that Roys upper body support stocking was noted and commented upon with much hilarity- Ron not Tron! On leaving The Lamb we followed Bockhampton Lane and Harrow Road through Neacroft before turning left onto Ringwood Road and heading for The Three Tuns at Bransgore. The Three Tuns was packed with standing room only for the Wobblies.

After The Three Tuns we followed Poplar Lane before turning right onto Burley Lane and headed for Burley through Thorney Hill and along Pound Lane to The Queens Head. At The Queens Head the Wobblies were joined by Mr and Mrs M who just couldn’t stay away from the Wobblies Christmas experience. After the Queens Head we cycled round to Burley Manor Hotel. Whether it was the beer was working or that Burley Manor is a unique experience, the Victoria Wood Two Soups sketch was recalled to much hilarity and the staff’s disgust. The Elm Tree at Ringwood was the next port of call after following Ringwood Road Burley Street and passing Crow Hill. After more beer several Wobblies departed so only Dangerous Dave, Sutts and Mr and Mrs M made it to The Furlong in Ringwood. After more beer Sutts and the M’s headed for home meaning that only Dangerous Dave was keeping the flame of earlier Wobblies rides alive by heading home via The New Queen and Avon Causeway.
